John J. Hamre

Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense

John J. Hamre, Ph.D., has been Chief Executive Officer and President of Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) since January 2000.

Prior to CSIS, Dr. Hamre served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense from 1997 to 2000 and Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) from 1993 to 1997. From 1978 to 1984, he served as Deputy Assistant Director of National Security and International Affairs in the Congressional Budget Office. Dr. Hamre has been Director of ITT Defense since 2000, ITT Corporation (ITT Industries) since 2000 and SAIC, Inc. since July 8, 2005. He has been a Trustee of the Mitre Corporation since 2000. He serves as Director of Integrated Nano-Technologies LPC. He serves as Trustee of Center for Strategic and International Studies. He serves as a Member of Government Advisory Board of Lucent Technologies Inc.He served as a Director of ChoicePoint Inc. since May 2002. He served as Member of National Advisory of The Private Sector Council. Dr. Hamre served as professional staff member of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1984 to 1993 with responsibilities for oversight and evaluation of procurement, research and development programs and defense budget issues.

Dr. Hamre received a B.A. degree, with highest distinction from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1972 emphasizing on Political Science and Economics. In 1973, he was a Rockefeller Fellow at Harvard Divinity School and was awarded a Ph.D, with distinction, from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University in 1978. His studies focused on International Politics and Economics and U.S. foreign policy.
